Buying a Used Car in Kenya: A Practical Checklist

A good used-car decision separates the vehicle, the seller, the documents, and the payment. Treat each as a separate check and do not let urgency replace evidence.

Before the viewing

  • Set a total budget that leaves room for inspection, transfer, insurance, and immediate maintenance.
  • Ask for the registration number and basic ownership context privately; do not request sensitive documents in a public chat.
  • Compare the asking price with similar year, engine, mileage, and condition—not only the make and model.

At the vehicle

  • View the car in daylight and inspect body-panel alignment, paint consistency, tyres, glass, lights, fluid leaks, and warning lights.
  • Confirm that the odometer shown matches the listing and ask for service evidence without assuming a verbal history is complete.
  • Test every major control and arrange a road test only with the seller’s permission and appropriate insurance.

Before payment

  • Use an independent mechanic or inspection service.
  • Verify ownership and transfer details through the appropriate official channels.
  • Use a written sale agreement and a traceable payment method. Never pay because someone claims another buyer is waiting.
