A listing and a visual walkaround help you shortlist a car. They do not replace a mechanical inspection. Use this checklist to make the viewing more productive.

Exterior and tyres
- Check panel gaps, overspray, rust, dents, cracked lenses, windscreen damage, and signs of water entry.
- Compare tyre brands, tread depth, wear patterns, sidewall age, and the condition of the spare wheel and tools.
- Photograph visible defects so later discussions refer to the same condition.
Interior and controls
- Check seat belts, windows, locks, air conditioning, infotainment, mirrors, lights, wipers, and dashboard warnings.
- Compare pedal, steering-wheel, and seat wear with the stated mileage.
- Confirm the chassis or VIN details privately against the vehicle and relevant documents; never publish the full number online.
Mechanical inspection
- Ask the mechanic to inspect cold starting, leaks, cooling, suspension, steering, brakes, transmission behaviour, diagnostic codes, and underbody condition.
- Request a written or photographed summary of urgent repairs and routine maintenance.
- Use the findings to decide—not merely to negotiate a lower price.
